Double Badge to Override a Door's Schedule

Learn how to override a door's schedule to an unlocked state

Updated over a week ago

Verkada's double badge feature allows an authorized user to override a door’s schedule to an unlocked state by presenting a valid badge credential two times in quick succession. A second double badge on the same door then removes the unlock override. If not removed manually, an override is also removed when the schedule changes to a new time window or at midnight.

Enable double badge

You can configure and enable the Double Badge setting on door schedules for time periods where the Door Status is access-controlled.

  1. In Verkada Command, go to All Products > Access.

  2. Under Doors, select the Verkada access-controlled door you want to configure.

  3. With the door page open, click Schedules.

  4. Hover over the door’s schedule and click Edit Schedule.

  5. On the door schedule settings page, select a time window to open the Edit Schedule popup.

When one of the weekdays is modified, an Edit Schedule window appears.

  6. On Edit Schedule:

    1. Set the hour and minute a schedule should start, and choose one or multiple days of the week the schedule should be applied to.

    2. At the bottom left, toggle on Double Badge to enable it.

    3. Once complete, click Done to finish creating your double badge schedule.

  7. At the top right of the settings page, click Save.

  8. Under Who can Double Badge, set your preferred double badge permissions, and click Done:

    • Anyone with access: All users with access to the door are allowed to double badge on doors with this door schedule.

    • Only specified groups: Only users in selected groups are able to double badge on doors with this door schedule.

Required. Selected groups must also have access to a door through an access level to be able to double badge on the door.

  9. At the top right of the Settings page, click Save.

Use double badge on an access-controlled door

Place an unlock override

  1. Scan your badge on the door’s reader a first time to grant access. If successful, the reader briefly displays a green LED and outputs a short beep.

  2. Within 5 seconds after the first scan, scan your badge a second time to grant access. The reader briefly displays a green LED status and outputs a short beep sound again.

  3. Following a second badge scan, the reader indicates a double badge was registered by:.

    1. Verkada readers: Green LED blinks 3 times and outputs a beep for each blink.

    2. Wiegand readers: Green LED blinks 2 times.

  4. After registering the double badge, the reader permanently displays a green LED to indicate the door is now unlocked.

Remove an unlock override

  1. Scan your badge on the door’s reader for the first time. If successful, the reader continues to display a green LED and outputs a short beep.

  2. Within 5 seconds after the first scan, scan your badge a second time. The reader outputs a short beep again.

  3. Following a second badge scan, the reader indicates a double badge was registered by:

    1. Verkada readers: White LED blinks 3 times and outputs a beep for each blink.

    2. Wiegand readers: Green LED blinks 2 times.

  4. After registering the double badge, the reader stops displaying a green LED to indicate that the door is now access-controlled.

Note: For readers with a PIN pad, you can perform a Double Badge to place and remove an unlock override by entering a valid PIN code twice within 5 seconds.

FAQ

What happens if you forget to double badge a second time?

Using Verkada Command, an Access Site Admin can easily remove an unlock override on a door. If not manually removed with a second double badge or from Command, an unlock override is also removed when the schedule changes to a new time window or at midnight.

Does double badge work on all Verkada and third-party Wiegand readers?

Yes, double badge is supported for all Verkada and third-party Wiegand readers.

Can you use double badge to toggle a normally unlocked door to access-controlled?

You can only toggle on Double Badge for a (normally) access-controlled door to unlocked. To use double badge to apply temporary access control, we recommend to set the door’s schedule to normally access-controlled, and then use double badge to unlock the door for extended time periods.

Can you use Bluetooth or remote unlock via the Verkada Pass app to double badge?

At this time, double badge is not supported for Bluetooth unlock or remote unlock via the Verkada Pass app.

Does a double badge on one door impact other doors with the same door schedule?

You can only use double badging to change the state of the door where the double badge occurs. To add or remove an unlock override on multiple doors, you must double badge each door, separately.
