Camera Power Requirements

Power requirements for Verkada cameras

Verkada cameras use Power over Ethernet (PoE) for power and network connectivity over your LAN. In most cases, cameras can connect directly to an access switch that supports the 802.3af PoE standard.

Requirements

  • Power sources for Verkada cameras must conform to IEEE 802.3 standards. Devices will not negotiate properly on UPOE or other proprietary PoE methods, regardless of whether those methods can deliver sufficient wattage.

  • If PoE is not available on the Ethernet switch, use PoE injectors between the camera and the switch.

  • All indoor Verkada cameras use industry-standard 802.3af PoE.

  • Most outdoor Verkada camera models require the higher-power 802.3at PoE+ standard to support the built-in cold-weather climate heater at temperatures below 16 °F (-8.5 °C).

  • If you are using an outdoor Verkada camera in a cold-weather climate and require the built-in heater, you need a PoE injector or switch that supports the higher-power 802.3at PoE+ standard.

  • The switch port must be configured as an access port, and all cameras will negotiate at full-duplex.

  • For full functionality, some camera models require an 802.3bt PoE++ power source.

Recommendations

  • Always ensure you do not exceed the PoE budget on your switch. The camera will not power on or will be stuck with a constant orange status LED.

  • For existing deployments that use coaxial cable, re-cabling with Ethernet may not be feasible. In these cases, use converters.

Remote series

The CR63-E is designed for remote deployments where continuous power and internet are not readily available. Unlike other Verkada cameras, the CR63-E does not use standard active PoE; instead, it relies on its internal battery, passive PoE, or solar power.
