# Lens Distortion Correction

Learn how to enable or disable Lens Distortion Correction (LDC)

The Lens Distortion Correction (LDC) feature is a digital image processing tool designed to correct optical distortion caused by camera lenses. Wide-angle lenses are essential for maximizing coverage area, but they naturally cause straight physical lines near the edges of the frame to appear curved or bent.

LDC digitally corrects this optical curvature in real time, straightening lines to provide a more natural perspective. This correction slightly reduces the camera's field of view. However, in some cases, users may prefer to see the camera's full field of view, even if it is slightly distorted at the edges. The LDC toggle enables you to do that.

{% hint style="danger" %}
You need **Org Admin** or **Site Admin** permissions for the site where the camera is located to edit camera settings.
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="info" %}
Lens Distortion Correction (LDC) is enabled by default. Most deployments benefit from keeping LDC turned on to ensure a clear, geometrically accurate perspective of your physical environment.
{% endhint %}

### Before you begin

Consider the visual trade-offs before modifying this setting:

* **Field of view (FOV) trade-off:** Digitally correcting lens distortion requires slightly stretching and cropping the edges of the video frame, resulting in a slightly narrower field of view. Disabling LDC reveals the maximum coverage area your camera sensor can capture, but introduces visible barrel distortion at the edges of the image.
* **Analytics accuracy**: In some extreme cases, edge distortion when LDC is disabled may affect AI analytics accuracy.

### How it works

LDC operates by applying a digital correction layer to your camera's live video stream and recorded footage:

* **LDC On (Enabled):** The camera's onboard processor applies a mathematical model to straighten curved lines. This creates a realistic perspective for live monitoring and forensic review, so physical structures such as walls, doorways, and corridors appear straight and proportional.

* **LDC Off (Disabled):** The camera displays the raw, uncorrected wide-angle stream. Disabling LDC exposes the entire image sensor, providing the widest possible horizontal and vertical FOV. However, straight lines near the frame edges appear significantly curved.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.verkada.com/verkada-cameras/configuration/view-and-edit-camera-settings/lens-distortion-correction.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
