# Set up a BK22

How to Setup and Perform Basic Configuration for the BK22

The Verkada BK22 Alarm Keypad is a multifunctional device used to arm or disarm partitions with a keycode, view device statuses, and wirelessly connect intrusion sensors.

You can also use existing alarm wiring to connect keypads to the Alarm Panel. This has the advantage of saving you time and money on installation by reusing existing cabling.

### Requirements

* The BK22 must be mounted horizontally (landscape orientation).
* The table below outlines the connectivity requirements:

|                             |                            |                                                                                                                                          |                                                                                                                                          |

The keypad must be running the latest firmware to use the LAN-connected BK22 with the Alarm Panel. When connected to the network, keypads update automatically. Allow the update to complete fully before testing functionality.

## Installation (RS485)

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
**Attach a 4-conductor wire to the BK22 (located in the back) to +,-,1A,1B.**

{% hint style="info" %}
Be mindful of the colors, as they must match the other side of the panel.
{% endhint %}

{% endstep %}

{% step %}
**Connect the other end of the cable to the Alarm Panel.**

<div align="left" data-with-frame="true"><figure><img src="https://2259276529-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FNU1He6Uj2tgInV2VdCLQ%2Fuploads%2FpWxoiooFYfRjGVxxdbjV%2FIMG_4206.jpg?alt=media&amp;token=d78b0f2d-c617-4955-b905-cfa221a42a9c" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
[**Add the BK22 serial number**](/command/organization-settings/add-a-device-to-your-command-organization.md) **or order number to Command.**

Verify the BK22 is powered on and online in Command. When the panel detects the keypad, click **Confirm** to establish the connection.
{% endstep %}
{% endstepper %}

## Installation (PoE)

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
**Attach a PoE cable to the back of the BK-22. To enable the BK22 to also see sensor partitions, the Alarm Panel and BK22 must be on the same local network. If video monitoring is only used, the device will just need access to the internet as an Alarm Panel is not required for Camera only partitions.**
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
[**Add the BK22 serial number**](/command/organization-settings/add-a-device-to-your-command-organization.md) **or order number to Command.**
{% endstep %}

{% step %}
**Verify the BK22 is powered on and online in Command. For LAN-based keypads, you should see 2 events:**

* **Online** indicating the keypad has internet access
* **Connected to panel** indicating the keypad has local connection to the Alarm Panel. Allow [Alarm Network Settings](https://help.verkada.com/new-alarms/getting-started/alarms-network-settings) for multicast communication over the local network.

## Configuration

{% stepper %}
{% step %}
**The image below shows the default landing screen for the BK22. Use this screen to view/change the Arm/Disarm status once you** [**add an alarm Keycode**](/new-alarms/configuration/alarm-sites/configure-new-alarms-site-settings.md)**.**

   {% endstep %}
   {% endstepper %}

{% hint style="danger" %}
After you enter a keycode into the BK22, you can arm or disarm the device without re-entering the keycode for 1 minute and 30 seconds. You can override this timer and lock the device immediately by pressing the back button in the top-left corner.
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="warning" %}
Follow the [installation guide](https://docs.verkada.com/docs/bk11-bk21-quick-start-guide.pdf) to mount your keypad after testing the functionality.

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the following URL with the `ask` and `goal` query parameters:

```
GET https://help.verkada.com/new-alarms/installation/set-up-a-bk22.md?ask=<question>&goal=<user_goal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is what the user is ultimately trying to achieve, the reason they need the answer. Sharing it helps GitBook give you a better, more relevant answer. A goal is most helpful when it describes the outcome the user wants rather than restating the question. For example, with `ask=how do I create an API token`, a goal like `automate deployments from our CI pipeline` lets GitBook tailor the answer to that use case.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
