Learn how to configure and install Verkada's GC31 Cellular Gateway

Updated over a week ago

Verkada's GC31 Cellular Gateway helps you connect Verkada products in remote locations, such as parks, parking lots, construction sites, oil and gas drilling sites, school buses, and even police cars. Anyone can easily set up the GC31 with its Power over Ethernet (PoE) input and PoE output. You can also easily manage and troubleshoot the router remotely via Verkada Command.

The GC31 natively integrates with Verkada products to enable faster setup, remote troubleshooting, and more efficient data usage. The GC31 instantly recognizes any Verkada device you connect to it, eliminating the need to input serial numbers or scan QR codes during device setup. You can track data usage for each connected device and receive alerts if a device is offline.

More key features include:

  • View the status and GPS location of your gateways

  • See which cell tower each gateway is using

  • Remotely run packet capture and speed tests

  • Remotely power cycle devices

  • Recognize connected Verkada devices and streamline setup.

Step 1: Set up Verkada Command

Required. You must create a Verkada Command account to activate and configure a GC31. You must be an Org Admin to configure a GC31. Learn more about Roles and Permissions for Command.

Step 2: Set up the hardware

Follow the steps to set up, install (wire and mount) the GC31 (indoor) | GC31-E (outdoor).

Troubleshoot the GC31

If you experience any issues with your GC31, we recommend following these steps:

  1. Power cycle the GC31.

  2. If the device connected to the GC31 is not getting power, check for the following:

    • Is the GC31 powered on?

      • If not, check the power input to the GC31.

    • Is the GC31 powered by a PoE injector?

      • Check if the injector is rated to provide enough power (must be 90W) to the GC31 and devices connected to it.

      • Check if the ethernet cable is connected properly and is verified.

    • Is the gateway powered through the terminal block?

      • Check if the power input line is rated 12–36V and is providing enough wattage to power the GC31 and devices connected to it.

    • Is the GC31 powered through an AC/DC power adapter?

      • Check if the power input line is rated 12–36V and is providing enough wattage to power the GC31 and devices connected to it.

FAQ

How should I manage the cellular connectivity?

A common issue with the GC31 is that the cellular connectivity might not be powerful enough. If this is the case, consider external/directional antennas to increase the signal strength and connectivity.

What if I have a weak connection?

If cameras don't have a good connection, when making changes, such as enabling analytics, the CV image might not get downloaded properly. A weak connection might lead to issues with uploading and downloading data, resulting in degraded device performance. The only way to resolve this issue is to reboot the camera so that it attempts again.
