Camera Power Requirements

Learn about the power requirements for the latest Verkada cameras

Updated over a month ago

Verkada cameras leverage Power over Ethernet (PoE) for power and communication over your LAN. In most cases, cameras can connect directly to an access switch that supports the 802.3af PoE standard.

Each outdoor model has a housing, integrated temperature gauge, and heater designed to be utilized in extreme weather and temperature conditions.

Requirements

  • Power sources for Verkada cameras must conform to IEEE 802.3 standards. Devices will not negotiate properly on UPOE or other proprietary PoE methods regardless of whether those methods can deliver sufficient wattage.

  • All indoor Verkada cameras use industry-standard 802.3af PoE.

  • Most outdoor Verkada camera models require the higher-power 802.3at PoE+ standard for the built-in cold-weather climate heater at temperatures below 16 ºF (-8.5 ºC).

  • If you are using an outdoor Verkada camera in a cold-weather climate and require the built-in heater, you need a PoE injector or switch that supports the higher-power 802.3at PoE+ standard.

  • The switch port must be configured as an access port, and all cameras will negotiate at full-duplex.

  • For full functionality, some camera models require an 802.3bt PoE++ power source.

Recommendations

  • Always ensure not to exceed the PoE budget on your switch. The camera will not power on or will be stuck with a constant orange status LED.

  • If PoE is not available on your Ethernet switch, we recommend ordering additional PoE injectors and inserting them between the camera and the switch.

  • For existing deployments using coaxial cable, it might not be feasible to re-cable with Ethernet, and in that case, we recommend using converters.

If you connect a multisensor to an insufficient power source, the camera may not operate as expected. If you see this message pop up when you log in to your Command account, verify that the power source supports PoE++ and outputs a minimum of 20W.
